Job Description

As an Assistant Farm Manager, you will play a crucial role in the daily operations and long-term success of the farm. This position involves direct oversight of various agricultural processes, staff management, and the implementation of sustainable farming practices. The role is vital in maintaining the health and productivity of diverse crops, particularly tree and orchard fruits like apples and cherries, while also contributing to Canada’s environmental goals.

• Manage and direct activities related to agricultural crop clipping.
• Supervise farm grooming operations.
• Develop and implement soil fertility programs.
• Organize and oversee all aspects of planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops.
• Direct field clearing activities.
• Manually remove suckers and water sprouts from plants.
• Guide staff in shoots positioning and seed cutting techniques.
• Train trees to enhance fruit production and quality.
• Execute weeding tasks as required.
• Ensure the proper maintenance of farm machinery, equipment, and buildings.
• Contribute to the overall management of farm operations.
• Maintain accurate financial and production records.
• Perform a variety of general farm duties.
• Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of staff and/or volunteers.
• Oversee the work of more than 20 individuals across different areas of responsibility.

Requirements

• Languages: Proficiency in English.
• Education: A secondary (high) school graduation certificate is required.
• Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in a related agricultural field.
• Certifications & Licences:
  • Chemical application certificate or licence.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
• Product & Crop Experience: Experience with perennials, including apples and cherries.
• Equipment Experience: Familiarity with automated irrigation systems, bulk handling systems, fertilizer applicators, tractors, and trucks.
• Specialization: Demonstrated skills and knowledge in specialized environmental practices.
• Personal Suitability: Must possess efficient interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication abilities, flexibility, organizational skills, a strong team player attitude, and adherence to values and ethics with leadership qualities.
• Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with a valid work permit).

Working Conditions & Benefits

This full-time, permanent position offers an hourly wage of $30.00 CAD, with an expected work week ranging from 30 to 60 hours. Shifts may include early morning, morning, day, evening, and flexible hours, starting as soon as possible. The work environment is located in a rural area and may involve exposure to dust, heat, noise, odours, and outdoor conditions, including during crop harvesting and in horticultural fields. This position is a “green job,” focused on tasks that contribute to positive environmental outcomes.
